Joining a sorority or a fraternity is the beginning of a
new experience with new friends and a new home away-from-home. Entering college is a change of
lifestyle for many students. The bonds of sisterhood
or brotherhood can make this transition easier. The
friends you make through your involvement in a
fraternity or sorority will last a lifetime.
Joining a Greek chapter enables you to develop friendships
with people who have the same values as you.
Greek students find that dedication, hard work, honesty,
and loyalty all work together to make the college
experience more positive. These values are incorporated
into the Greek system through leadership, scholarship,
service, and social activities. All these principles
that Greeks live by require that the members of
the different chapters uphold their values. Every
chapter has values that members are encouraged and
challenged to strive for each and every day of their
lives.
Besides sharing common values, the bonds formed
through sisterhood and brotherhood are strong. There
is nothing like having someone to talk to at all hours
of the day or having people to study with until 2 or 3
in the morning. Social activities, hanging out, studying,
and meeting new people are what sisterhood and
brotherhood are all about. It is about developing a
unique lifelong bond with your brothers and sisters.
Ritual shared by the members of a fraternity or a
sorority helps to make the bonds felt between brothers
and sisters stronger. It is through ritual that the meanings,
values, and expectations of the fraternity and
sorority are made known to its members. For most
chapters, their ritual ceremony is kept a secret and
shared only between members.
Sisterhood and brotherhood provide the opportunity
for you to really learn who you are as a person and to
share your life with other people. |
